The Blur That Was January-March

In between sicknesses we did have some exciting events this January-March.

In January Liberty had her Winter dance recital.  She lucked out and got to have two of her Aunts come watch!

Levi made his last Blue and Gold Banquet cake, the Olympic Half Pipe,

And his/our very last Pinewood Derby!  Three boys = NINE derbies all together.

At the Boise State STEM day Cade made this awesome creation.

Levi LOVES science and when he begged his good friend to loan him his microscope, I decided it was time to buy our own.  You would have thought it was Christmas morning.  No sooner had we brought it home then he went downstairs and looked at all 20 slides.

I came in one day to find Levi's bed made this way:

We had presidential pancakes on President's Day

Caderade made the school team for the Math Counts Competition this year.  His team won 2nd at the Chapter competition and...

3rd at State!

Levi finished a huge project and presentation on Louis Pasteur at school.  He did a great job on his presentation!  I was glad to get those two bottles of pasteurized chicken broth off my counter after a whole month.

Our  sweet neighbor down the street made Liberty some beautiful doll clothes for her American Girl Doll and she has been dressing her up as a mini me.

Love this girl.

That's what we've been up to.

Stay tuned for Spring Break 2018!

Quarantined

News Bulletin:
This blog could not be brought to you this winter due to the NEVER ENDING sickness that has befallen the Hymas household.  They have been quarantined until further notice.

This is what I should have posted a month ago but couldn't because I was too busy taking care of sick children and sick husbands. (just one husband) Rock really set the tone for our year with his trip to the ER on January 1st.  We haven't had any more emergency room visits or rides in the ambulance but we have had at least one child and often more than one child home sick from school since the day they went back after Christmas break.  Just when I think I've got them all better, someone else comes down with something.  And Rock and I have not escaped unscathed either.  Since the middle of December we have had the flu-diarrhea style, the flu-stomach style, the flu-fever and aches style, pink eye, sinus infection, pink eye (Rock had it twice), colds, hives, coughs that will not go away, runny noses, congestion, soar throats, a pulled hamstring (Reagan from track) and to finish it all off (I Hope!) Rock has been sick for three weeks with Bronchitis and is now on the mend. I have started to feel like I am keeping a Petri dish instead of keeping house. The nurse at the elementary school and I are on a first name basis and I swear she thinks I'm neglecting my children. If I have to see the school name on my caller ID one more time I will shoot myself, if the nurse doesn't first.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised.  Our family has always been very healthy and we haven't had to deal with much sickness.  The kids are now all finally back at school.  And every day that I wake up with no one else sick I praise the Lord above.

News Bulletin:
We now return you to our regularly scheduled blog.  :-)

Happy New Year! Are Those Fireworks or Ambulance Lights?

It is now February and New Years has faded into history, but here at our house New Year's Day was quite the memorable day and it's time I got it written down.

We usually miss the fireworks on New Year's Eve.  We eat our finger food by candle light, talk about our favorites from the year and then we go to bed.  In recent years the older boys have wanted to stay up till midnight to experience that oh so anti-climatic switch over from 11:59 to 12:00 that leaves us non drinkers feeling somehow gypped.  This year I stayed up with the boys and Rock went to bed so he could get up bright and early and start his new year right, lifting weights at the gym.

When he got home from the gym on New Year's Day, he was pretty worn out.  He mumbled something about doing heavy lifting with his legs and sat down to rest in his recliner.  He was pretty out of it so I gave up trying to converse with him.  He made himself some eggs at the stove and then sat down to eat them.  I asked him what his plans were for the day and he did not say, "Oh, I plan to pass out three times and spend the day in the hospital." But that's what he did.

Right as I asked my question he passed out with a bang as his head hit the floor.  I wish I could say that I kept a cool head and calmly tried to wake him up, but I didn't.  I panicked, ran over to him and started yelling his name, shaking him trying to get him to wake up.  When he wouldn't, I ran to the phone and dialed 911.  My brain could not make my fingers push the right numbers.  No wonder they teach you how to do that as a small child and make you practice it over and over.  By the time they answered he was coming to and I sheepishly told them never mind.  He laid on the floor for a long time too woozy to sit up.  Finally after about twenty minutes he sat up in a chair.  A few minutes later he wanted to walk over to his recliner so we tried that but he couldn't get all the way across the room before sitting down on the couch and passing out a second time.  Panic set in again as I yet again yelled his name and shook him trying to get him to wake up.  And these were not peaceful passing outs.  They were jerky with twitching.  The scary kind. I was scared enough the kids were freaking out by this point. They'd come up to investigate after the initial bang from his head hitting the floor and were there to see me in all my glorious not-calmness.  Libby ran upstairs in tears wile I called 911 again.  I realize that they need to know your address when you call them, but until that moment, never having called 911 before that day, I never knew how nearly impossible it is to remember your address when you are in an emergency.  "My husband could be dying and you want me to spell Buttercup!!!???  I finally got the address out and she walked me through what to do and ordered an ambulance.  I am cheap enough I hesitated a little when she asked me if I wanted her to send one.  I saw huge dollar signs in my head and wondered whether I was just over reacting and should maybe just drive him to the hospital myself, but she convinced me otherwise and hung up.  Not 5 minutes later the ambulance arrived with a fire truck in tow.  As they were making their way to the door Rock, who had come to for a minute, passed out a third time.  I ordered Cade to the door so I could try and revive Rock again.  Five, maybe six EMT's walked into our house with a stretcher.  They took over asking Rock lots of questions, most of which he couldn't even answer because he'd forgotten everything he'd done that morning.  After examining him they decided to take him in to the hospital but told me they would  not be turning on their lights as they didn't feel like he was in that much danger.  If he passed out again, however, they'd flip on the lights and break all the traffic rules, which, I was informed, I was not supposed to do as I followed in the car. I ran upstairs to comfort Libby, say a little prayer with her and send all the kids downstairs to watch some tv.  Oh, and to wake Reagan up.  Yes, he had slept through all the excitement and I felt terrible having to wake him up to say, "So your dad passed out three times and now we are going to the hospital. You're babysitting.  Good morning!" I called my parents and asked them to come over and be with my frightened children while I went to the hospital.

Somewhere during all of this I had the presence of mind to think, "This is going to make a great blog post someday." so I snuck Cade my phone and told him to go take a picture of the ambulance and fire truck in front of our house.  I didn't feel like I could say to the EMT, "Could you hold on a sec before telling me about my husband's diagnosis while I run outside and take a picture of your ambulance for my blog?"
So I dutifully listened to the EMT and sent Cade to get pictures:

By this time I was getting texts from friends (word travels fast) and neighbors were all coming over to see if there was anything they could do to help.  Can I just say that I live on the best cul-de-sac in the world?!.  My sweet neighbors prayed for us that day, offered help and brought us dinner. Love my Buttercup Peeps!

My sisters showed up to the house just as the ambulance was leaving and I followed it to the hospital.  My state of mind through all this was hard to describe.  As long as Rock was conscious I was not scared.  I felt pretty ok about it all.  When he was unconscious I couldn't even think straight. As I drove to the hospital my Relief Society president called to see what was going on.  Ironically enough she was also at the hospital with her daughter and was leaving as I walked in.  What a tender mercy that was, to have Karel there ready with a hug.

For the next four hours we sat in the hospital while they ran test after test to find out what happened.  They pumped Rock full of fluids and he was totally fine after that.  No more passing out, mentally with it.  After all that, they could not tell us why it happened.  They said it must have been a freak thing.  Rock suspected that it was the heavy lifting workout he did with his legs after not working out for two weeks that did it, but it wasn't until the next day when we found some articles on the subject that we really put the pieces together.  I think if we'd gone to a Sports Physician he would have known exactly what had happened.  Apparently it is fairly common for people to pass out after doing heavy leg workouts with weights or even running.  If they don't cool down properly afterwards the blood can't get from their legs to their head.  Rock had not cooled down after his workout and then got in the car and turned on my nifty new seat heater and heated up his legs even MORE!  He'd also not eaten or drunk much that day.  He overheated himself after a hard leg workout.

Once we knew Rock was going to be ok, I called home to talk to Liberty and make sure she'd calmed down. She was fine by then and so I talked to Reagan next, who told me that after the ambulance left he'd asked everyone what had happened since he'd missed it all. Liberty informed him that Dad had 'passed away' (passed out).  We had a nice long laugh about that one.

We got home about 4:00 that afternoon and my sweet sisters who are always there to help me when I need it got to go home.  It's not how they'd planned to spend their day, but later, when I asked Liberty when it was that she calmed down and stopped feeling scared, she said, "Once Alli got there." Thanks again, girls.
"There were never such devoted sisters."

Rock has had no problems since and we are so grateful for wonderful neighbors, friends, family and doctors who helped us that day.  We are grateful it appears to have been nothing serious and I'm grateful for a healthy husband who almost never has health issues.  Knock on Wood!

And that is how we rang in the new year.  We didn't get fireworks or even ambulance lights, but we sure kicked it off with a BANG.

Christmas 2017

This was another Sick Christmas.  All of us were sick at least twice this December with everything from stomach flu, regular flu, diarrhea, pink eye and a cough/cold that will NOT STOP.  Sickness notwithstanding, we managed to get through four choir concerts and an orchestra concert before school got out.

Levi singing on the capital steps for the tree lighting

We finally got some great snowman making snow!

Reagan helped put up the Christmas lights

Christmas Eve

The Angel of the Lord had pink eye this year.  We took her to the one hour church meeting that day figuring her goopy eyes could hold off for that long.  Nope.  We blew through all our tissues before the opening prayer!  So Rock ended up taking her home.

She was a great angel of the Lord in our Nativity, though.

New Clothes this year instead of pj's for Christmas Eve
They all look so old in this picture... sigh.

Christmas Day

Cade and Levi were up before the crack of dawn (3:00 AM!) Christmas morning despite all my threats to end their lives and burn all their presents if they got up before 6:00.  They take after their father in this regard, unfortunately.

Here are some highlights.

A sewing box for Liberty

 A sling shot for Reagan

 Logic Games for the Logical

 Laser Guns for Levi

Rock gave me the gift of warmth this year.  A heated car seat pad and a heated blanket for my favorite chair.  Let me tell you, heated car seats = Nirvana!

And that was Christmas!
With Christmas at the very beginning of break we had two lazy weeks to play with our new toys and relax...and cough, or rub our pink eye.  School started four days ago and Levi still hasn't gone back to school!  I hope life goes back to normal soon.

Rich People

Here's a funny conversation Rock overheard recently between Levi and Liberty:

They were talking about invisibility cloaks, as I am currently reading Harry Potter to them, and how they actually exist, but only for very small things right now. Levi said that even when they are able to make them bigger they'll be very expensive.
"Like, one hundred dollars!", said Liberty.
"No way, that's cheap, more like millions of dollars!", said Levi. "Only rich people could have them."
"So Donald Trump would have one. He's rich. He was a billionaire, and now he's the president, so he has tons of money," said Liberty.
"Yeah, he's rich, but there are richer people," Levi countered. "Like Bill Cosby."
"Bill Cosby?" Libby asked.
"Yeah, Bill Cosby started Microsoft, and he's the richest person in America."

And there you have it.

Happy Thanksgiving and a Hamster

Tips for An Easy Thanksgiving Dinner:

1. Have one of your kids get sick so that half your guests decide not to come.
2. Assign out all the last minute food items that make you crazy and wish you hadn't offered to host after all like gravy and mashed potatoes so you don't have to worry about it.
3. Buy your rolls at Costco and your Pumpkin pie too.
4. Make sure your "fresh" turkey is really fresh and not half frozen.
5. Don't actually cook your turkey.

This year, thanks to a sick Libby we had just my parents, my sisters and us.  I planned it just right so I only had to worry about the turkey at the last minute.  I did not follow tip #4, unfortunately and when it came time to get the turkey ready, I realized it was partially frozen.  Sigh.  But it only bumped us back an hour and our turkey was cruisin along ready to be done in 2.5-3 hours.  At 2 hours I checked it in 5 different places and the temperature was 10 degrees higher than was recommended for a done turkey. Gasp! I texted our few guests, "The turkey is done early and you better get over here pronto!" and we scrambled to get the table set and the last few things done.  They rushed to get everything finished, arriving shortly thereafter and we proceeded to cut the turkey.  When Rock kept running into bone and couldn't find the meat we realized that we'd put the turkey in upside down and that it was not, in fact, cooked yet. Yes, we are turkey challenged.  Thank goodness for the microwave!  Our turkey was perfectly moist and miraculously tasted great despite our ineptitude.  Alli put it perfectly when she said, "This was the easiest Thanksgiving dinner ever.  You didn't even have to cook the turkey!"

This one is blurry, but it's the only one we got that day.  Personally, I like the beautiful, healthy looking head of hair on the bottom right.

Luckily the turkey turned out ok and we were not reduced to eating our new hamster.  Yes, you read that correctly.  We have a pet at our house.  Well, a pet more exciting than a fish.  Levi worked very hard and saved for a long time to buy a hamster.  It is the first exciting pet we've ever had and Levi is very proud of his Snickers.

We are thankful for all our blessings this year.  Especially sunsets in Boise!

Fallishness

Here are some random fall happenings here at our house.

Raking Leaves

And we have a 15 year old!

I've told him, we may be in Idaho, but he's NOT getting his license till he's 16.  There are no tractors on our property he needs to drive.

We are so excited to have a new temple less than ten minutes from our house!  The Meridian Idaho temple is opening in two weeks!  Our first time through the open house as a family was right after they opened and they were so concerned about getting enough people through that they only did silent tours and pushed us through in one big long line, not allowing us to really stop in any of the rooms or feel the spirit of the temple.  I was pretty bummed.  About a week later I was ushering at the temple and saw that they had changed how they were doing the tours. They were doing talking tours, letting people sit in the Celestial room for a bit, and explaining what each room was for.  I felt strongly that I should take each of my kiddos back through the temple open house on their own and make it a lunch date.  So I've checked each one out of school for lunch and the temple over the last two weeks!  It was a wonderful experience!  Such a tender mercy.  I hope they will cherish it as much as I did.

The view of the mountains

I forgot my phone the day I  took Reagan.  :-(

 The beautiful Boise River Greenbelt
Levi wanted to go here on his date with me a few weeks ago.  It was the perfect fall day.

Liberty has learned to cross stitch!  She's done nothing but cross stitch since Sunday when I taught her.  She made the letters up herself.
